Summary:
The Digital Archivist is responsible for managing and preserving digital assets within a library or information center. This role requires a deep understanding of archiving principles and practices, as well as expertise in digital preservation techniques. The Digital Archivist will play a crucial role in organizing, digitizing, and preserving various types of media, ensuring long-term accessibility and retrieval.
Responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement strategies for the acquisition, appraisal, arrangement, description, and preservation of digital records and media.
2. Collaborate with internal stakeholders to identify digital assets requiring preservation and develop appropriate workflows for ingestion, storage, and retrieval.
3. Conduct regular assessments of digital collections to ensure integrity, quality, and adherence to archival standards.
4. Employ industry best practices to manage and preserve digital content, including file formats, metadata, and digital rights management.
5. Research and implement emerging technologies and tools relevant to digital preservation, ensuring the long-term accessibility and usability of digital assets.
6. Establish and maintain relationships with external partners, such as technology vendors and research institutions, to enhance digital archiving capabilities.
7. Develop and deliver training programs to educate staff and stakeholders on digital preservation best practices.
8. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of digital assets within the library's information systems.
9. Stay updated on industry trends, standards, and legal requirements related to digital archiving and make recommendations for continuous improvement.
10. Contribute to the development and maintenance of policies, procedures, and guidelines for digital preservation activities.
Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Library and Information Science, Archival Studies, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
2. Proven experience in managing and preserving digital collections within a library or archival setting.
3. In-depth knowledge of archival principles, standards, and best practices, including digital preservation strategies.
4. Familiarity with digital asset management systems, metadata standards, and digital rights management.
5. Proficiency in using digital preservation tools and software, such as Archivematica, Preservica, or similar platforms.
6. Strong understanding of file formats, data migration, and conversion processes.
7. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
8. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
9. Demonstrated ability to stay updated on emerging trends and technologies in the field of digital archiving.
10. Knowledge of copyright laws, intellectual property rights, and privacy regulations related to digital collections.
